The Last Days of the Temple Explorer:
The forest around Angkor Thom at that time was dense and overgrown, and Bayon lay quietly under the trees for many centuries. A Frenchman named Jean Commaille, a former officer of the foreign legion who later became a monk and devoted artist, stood in front of that stone monument in 1908 in the role of the first conservator of the Angkor temple group. At that time, he had no methodology, no model, and not enough money, only the forest, the stones, and a group of Cambodian workers whom he had to teach directly.
From 1911 to 1914, he spent almost all his time on Bayon. Day by day, he hauled away soil, cut plants growing alongside the walls, arranged the fallen stone beams into their original layouts surrounding the temple, which is why later researchers thanked him, because those stones remained in their original locations. And when the soil and vegetation were removed, the bas-reliefs emerged, revealing: military parades, war boats, markets, kitchens — the lives of people flowing from three to five centuries ago. What we read today on the walls of Bayon is thanks to this man, who cleared the forest before anyone else. He also wrote *Guide aux ruines d'Angkor* (1912) and recorded historical notes.
He also wrote *Guide aux ruines d'Angkor* (1912) and kept a nearly daily journal, which has become an invaluable historical record to this day. On April 29, 1916, he left Siem Reap to return to the construction site, carrying workers' monthly wages with him. Along the way through the Angkor area, a group of thieves who knew about the money attacked him violently. He survived for only one more night. On April 30, 1916, he passed away at his home at the age of approximately 47 (born in Marseille on June 24, 1868). The three criminals were arrested and executed in Phnom Penh. As for his Cambodian workers, they mourned for a long period and firmly denied any suspicion that they had colluded with the killers. He was cremated at the Bayon East enclosure—a small dry stone building shaped like a chapel with a Khmer-style gabled door, resembling a small temple. Mr. Henri Parmentier wrote in a memorial that Monsieur Kammer would be remembered not because of that small building, but because of the works he left at Angkor, as the old stones still stand today. Nowadays, thousands of tourists walk past that enclosure without knowing that the man lying inside
